Nelson and his favorite lady! |
Nelson is Charles, the Duc de Villiers,
disguised as a bondsman while he flees the wrath of the King
of France. He is sold into the household of Marianne de Beaumanoir
who is entranced by his voice and intrigued by his adeptness
at household management. But the fairy tale romance that is
blossoming is cut to the quick when a ship’s captain
arrives and reveals Charles’ true identity. Marianne
sends him away without revealing his whereabouts to those who
seek him.
Jeanette is Marianne whose heart is broken
when her new love is unmasked as the scandalous Duc de Villiers.
After he escapes, she decides to pack up and leave the new
World for a loveless life in France. But fate has other plans
and she finds herself marooned with Charles on a tropical island
where he plans to build a new colony and a new life. |
The Cast!
Mary Boland is
Marianne’s aunt, Valerie de Rossac whose tales of scandal
in the French court create havoc in the lives of Charles and
Marianne.
Mary was born on January 28 th, 1880 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
but she was convent-educated in Detroit, Michigan where she
followed her father’s example and began acting in stock
while she was still in her teens. Her film debut came in 1915
but she became famous in the madcap comedies of the 1930’s
often playing opposite Charles Ruggles. Mary never married.
She died on June 23 rd, 1965 in New York City of a heart attack
at 85. |

Dick Purcell |
Dick Purcell is
Alexander, Charles’ second in command who is the first
to follow him into battle and also wins the heart of Marianne’s
lovely maid, Julie.
Dick was born Richard Purcell on August 6 th, 1908 in Greenwich,
Connecticut and educated at Fordham University where he played
on the hockey team. His short film career began in 1930 with
a bit part in “Doorway to Hell” and continued through
73 films and serials as one of Warner’s most durable
supporting players. Dick played the gamut of heroes and heels
and villains until his untimely death. On April 10 th, 1944
after an 18 hole game of golf, he was found dead in the locker
room of a massive heart attack. He was only 36 years old. |
H. B. Warner plays Father Michel, shepherd
of the brides on board on their way to Martinique when Charles
commandeered their ship.
He was born Henry Byron Warner on October 26 th, 1876 in
London, England and grew up wanting to be a doctor. But this
son of the famous British actor, Charles Warner changed his
mind after studying medicine in college and followed his father’s
footsteps into a distinguished stage career. Warner’s
first big film role was that of Christ in the silent De Mille
epic “King of Kings” (1927). He was nominated for
a Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Chang in “The
Lost Horizon” (1937). Warner married twice both unions
ending in divorce. He died on December 21 st, 1958 in Woodland
Hills, California at the age of 82. |

Grant Mitchell |
Grant Mitchell is the Governor
of New Orleans eager to welcome Marianne and her entourage
to the French colony.
Born on June14 th, 1874 in Columbus, Ohio, Grant was the
son of General John Grant Mitchell and educated at Yale and
Harvard Law School. But he soon left his law practice for the
life of a thespian and made his Broadway debut in 1902 and
his film debut in 1916. Mitchell made 128 films, most as a
character actor in “B” films but with occasional
supporting roles in classic “A” pictures. He never
married and died on May 1 st, 1957 of a stroke in Los Angeles,
California. He was 82. |
George Zucco is the villainous Ribaud
hoping to capture Charles and his band of rebels sailing the
very ship “New Moon” that Charles awaited to take
his band to freedom.
Zucco was born in Manchester, England on January 11 th, 1886
and made his stage debut in Canada in 1908. Later he worked
in American vaudeville and stock companies and appeared on
both Broadway (he played Disraeli to Helen Hayes’ “Victoria
Regina”) and the London stage. In 1930, George made his
film debut and continued to appear in movies typically in master
criminal roles or as mad scientists and other dastardly characters.
He was married twice, both unions ending in divorce. He is
the father of actress Frances Zucco. George died on May 28
th, 1960 in Hollywood at the age of 74. |

The director!

Robert Z. Leonard was born Robert Zigler
Leonard on October 7 th, 1889 in Chicago, Illinois. He made his
stage debut at 14 and acted and sang with the California Light
Opera Company before entering films. But directing became his
passion. Of the Mac/Eddy films, he directed 3 (“Maytime” (1937), “Girl
of the Golden West” (1938) and “New Moon” )
and assisted on one… “Naughty Marietta” (1935).
He produced and directed “Dancing Lady” (1930) with
Nelson, and “The Firefly” (1937) with Jeanette. Leonard
died in 1968 at the age of 78. |

Other Featured Players!
Willam Tannen played Pierre , a member of Charles’ band
of rebels who also had his eye on Marianne.
He was born on November 17 th, 1911 in New York City and died December
2 nd, 1976 in Woodland Hills, California. Bill was the son of actor
Julius Tannen and brother of actor Charles Tannen. He made 196 films
in his career and was very active on television.

Bunty Cutler Played
Julie, Marianne’s maid.
She also won the hearts of Alexander, Charles right-hand man.
Bunty only made 4 films in her short career. Where she was born
and other vital statistics are not known at this time.

Stanley Fields is
Tambour, a robust and hearty
seaman with a zest for life and a wry sense of humor.
He was born Walter L. Agnew on May 20 th, 1883 in Allegheny, Pennsylvania.
Stanley’s first passion was boxing but he eventually found
acting and , in made his debut in films. Fields made 103 films as
a popular character actor before his death on April 23 rd, 1941 of
a heart attack the year after he made this film. He was 57 years
old.
