Legends of the New Age…….Those fabulous actors who came after the golden age had passed but who have gone on, leaving behind a remarkable body of work. They have now become legends in our time and deserve their own place in history.

Legends of tomorrow………..They are the talented actors of today piling up treasures to insure their place in cinematic history. You have chosen them to be in this honored group.

Gerald Butler
Issue #24

…..and now here are more of your selections!

Christine from Millbrae, California writes…

Dear Arabella…

I hope we are allowed a second pick for legends…..

Ah, yes, Christine. If I recall you were the one who chose Kevin Spacey for one of our first Legend pages. Here’s your second selection…

James Spader

He was born James Todd Spader on February 7 th, 1960 in Boston , Massachusetts to Todd and Jean Spader, both teachers.
James is married to Victoria Kheel, a set decorator and they have two sons, Sebastian and Elijah.

Christine continues…He attended Phillips Academy in Andover but quit in the 11 th grade to pursue a career in acting. From that point on, he alternated between studio films and indies. He starred with Susan Sarandon in “ White Palace ”, did 2 sci-fi films “Stargate” and “Supernova” and then the oddball existential “The Music of Chance”. Then came “Crash” (1996) with Holly Hunter, a disturbing, provocative film made for adults that most studios were hesitant to release…and “Secretary”(2002) that also faced rating problems.

Spader explained : I like playing character roles and I don’t mind being a real s.o.b. or embarrassing myself, as long as I find the role challenging”.

Spader is now in his 3 rd season on the television series “”Boston Legal”…. he has won 2 best actor Emmy awards for his current series and “The Practice”. He is…outstanding…..and always willing to risk off-beat roles. He will probably never play a super hero…he is almost blind without his glasses (he can’t wear contact lenses) most likely would crash into a building!

Gee, Christine, I can see you really like the guy. I couldn’t have said it better myself! And there are some treasures out there on DVD: “Alien Hunter” with Janine Eser and “Shadow of Fear” with Matt Davis

Bernadette from Waretown , New Jersey is another second-timer.

She writes….

I would like to nominate Dermot Mulroney for the legends of the future. I believe him to be one of the best romantic leads coming on the scene in quite a while…he is so handsome and has a talent for comedy and drama. He is handsome in a kind of earthy way and yet he can be your best friend or the boy next door….in short, he is multitalented.

Bernadette, you are becoming quite expert at picking out very handsome stars. You also chose “Phantom”s Gerard Butler for our legend list. But I heartily agree on your new selection…

Dermot Mulroney

He was born on October 31 st, 1963 in Alexandria , Virginia , to Michael and Ellen Mulroney. He was one of 5 children in this Irish-American family.

Dermot has been married for 16 years to actress Catherine Keener and they have one son, Clyde , age 7.

Now, where to start? He is handsome, for certain, leading a costumer for one of his films to say “ he has that Irish handsomeness of a Tyrone Power”. I heartily agree.

He is multi-talented…oh, yes. He has taken roles with bite and sometimes where he is hardly recognizable. I can think of several…”Young Guns” in 1988 as Dirty Steve, John, the first character in a film to die of AIDS in “Longtime Companion”(1990), the rookie detective in “Copycat” (1995) and as balding Randall in “About Schmidt”(2002). Plus he has a BFA from Northwestern and plays the cello. And like James Spader above, Dermot picked many of his roles from low-budget, independent films for their message or their challenges.

Romantic…well, this is what a movie critic said of him in a review of “The Wedding Date” in 2005: “ …the talented Mulroney more than fits the bill as the sexiest man money can buy…(and) there’s no question that he has a way with a raised eyebrow”….and that was from a critic.

Yep, I’m in total agreement, Bernadette. This Halloween birthday boy has a lot of tricks in his bag, a treat to look at….and a big talent!

Current films out on DVD: “Must Love Dogs” and “The Family Stone”

In post-production: “ Griffin and Phoenix” with Amanda Peet
