Back in the golden days of movie-making, stars were encouraged to keep their faces in front of the public and their noses out of trouble. Magazine product endorsements were the perfect way to do that and get paid for it…..after a generous cut for the studio. But studios also demanded that any product endorsement be approved…no bunion pads, no washing machines, no mops or irons. Movies stars were to be shown as pampered creatures with servants to do all the menial chores. So perfumes, complexion aids, dress patterns and cigarettes were on the A-list….approved without question and household appliances, laxatives and pain medications were forbidden. Cigarettes were by far the most popular item on the A- list because smoking was integral in films and Hollywood was definitely a “smokin’ city”! Here are a few I thought were interesting…..

Dan and Linda never got the Surgeon General’s message…..smoking can be dangerous to your health!

Double exposure for George…I wonder if she hated his talcum powder!

These were studio award-winners…. movie stars, upcoming films and studio make-up artists!

Lips are in…..and the price is right!

Yep, this is Ann Sothern. That wave could be used with less heat from those machines with tentacles?

Washing one’s lingerie was allowed even for movie stars!
