Beth’s boyfriend, assistant District Attorney Josh Lindsey, seeks Mick’s help to find a missing witness and plug a leak in the police department. But the job takes Mick into the desert, the worst place for a vampire, and the cell phone isn’t picking up a signal. This time it is Beth who saves his life…but he realizes being near him puts Beth in danger.
The Bird and The Worm

Mick tries his best to avoid Beth after the desert episode but fate has other plans. The murder of a call girl puts them both in the morgue at the same time and Beth tries to make Mick admit that something special has happened between them. Then, in the parking lot, that something special happens again.
“Maybe it is the sum of a million coincidences we don’t quite control that brings us to a particular place at a particular time or maybe it’s the choices we make, the actions we take. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in 85 years it’s that what we want doesn’t always matter but then again, sometimes it’s all that does.”….Mick
Josh is following up on a series of drug overdoses and Mick’s friend Josef is looking for a centuries-old vampire known as Lola. When they begin connecting the dots between a drug known as Black Crystal, dead vampires and a cache of silver, Beth and Mick wind up on the same case again. But when Beth decides to try some of the drug, she ends up at Mick’s apartment in a cold shower.
Beth: “I had to spend two hours getting myself up to club admission ability and you’re just wearing the same thing you always wear.”
Mick: “Yes, well, perpetual coolness is the vampire’s curse.”
Josef: “This is vampire blood.”
Mick: “Yes. Apparently the high is us!”
Ain't That Just Like a Woman
At a fire downtown Mick met his worst nightmare….vampire ex-wife Coraline. Or was it? Morgan Vincent walked and talked like Coraline but he knew she was dead. He knew because he killed her. When the very human Morgan comes to him to help find a thief, the plot thickens. And he gets the feeling that the situation is upsetting Beth. Is he chasing ghosts or simply losing his mind?
Beth: “I wouldn’t have picked her as your type.”
Mick: “This is not about type.”
Beth: “Even if it is, it’s fine. It’s your business.”
Mick: “You’re jealous.”
Beth: “Don’t flatter yourself.”
(Mick smiles) “OK! “
Beth is covering the execution of a serial killer and makes friends with Audrey, the young material witness who barely escaped his clutches. Outside his “family” howls in protest. But the killer vows to take vengeance even after death and Audrey is terrified. After a few frightening episodes both Beth and Audrey take refuge in Mick’s apartment while he searches for answers. At the apartment Beth uncovers another mystery that links her to Mick and wants some answers herself.
Shepard: “Come on, two vampires and two lovely ladies? In my day we called that a party.
Mick: “Yeah, well, I outgrew that stage.”
Beth is now totally fixated on Morgan Vincent and the Coraline connection. She persuades Mick to include Morgan in a hot love triangle case he is investigating while she tries to uncover more clues to Morgan’s past. It leads both of them down dangerous paths. Mick learns he is still emotionally tied to Coraline. Beth, thinking Morgan is a vampire, stabs her with a wooden stake leaving her critically wounded.
Josef: “Mick and Coraline’s relationship was one of those terrifying completely self-destructive freak shows that you spend your entire life searching for and knowing it will only end in one of one or both of you dead.”
An explosion takes out the top floor of a downtown office building that includes Josef’s office. He is listed among the dead and Beth tries to comfort a grief-stricken Mick. But Josef turns up alive and angry in Mick’s apartment before disappearing again with a hired assassin on his trail. Mick and Beth are in hot pursuit. They finally track Josef to a townhouse in New York where he lives a secret life….with Sarah Whitley!
Josef: “Are you going to just stand there or are you going to help me find out who killed me?”
Beth: “Where are you going?”
Mick: “To New York…to keep Josef from doing something stupid”.
Beth: “I’m coming, too”.
Mick: “Why?”
Beth: “To keep you from doing something stupid!”
Josh is working on a very high profile case involving a El Salvador mob king only to find out the mob had “marked” Beth for death if he pursues the case. Beth convinces him not to step down but, later, Mick saves her from one of the assassin’s bullets. Josh is next on the hit list and he’s not as lucky. Mick tries valiantly to save his life but the damage to his heart is too much. Beth begs Mick to ‘turn’ him into a vampire so he will live. When Mick tells her won’t do that to Josh, she refuses to see him. Later Mick deals out vampire justice.
Mick: “I did a lot of bad things after I was turned; things that you can never imagine, things that I carry tremendous amounts of guilt about….I want to make up for them.”
Beth is still avoiding Mick and he is deeply saddened. But then two medieval vampires come looking for Coraline who disappeared from the hospital taking her secret with her. He traces Coraline and a friend to a warehouse and meets up with one of the old vamps, Lance, who seems bent on killing the lady. She escapes but comes back to Mick’s apartment to find a subdued Beth there. She lets Mick have some of the secret compound…. only temporary at best….and then gives herself up to Lance to save the now human Mick from death.
Coraline: “Beth is starting to like me. She didn’t try to stab me this time.
At Josh’s funeral…
Beth: “Wait….are you human?”
Mick: “For now, yeah.”
Beth: “How does it feel?”
Mick: “The pain, the sun, the mortality…It feels amazing!”
He's Not Heavy, He's My Brother
Beth invites Mick to a picnic on the beach where she lets him know she’s in love with him. But before the day is over, both are knee deep in murder. This time it is Beth’s boss, Maureen. At the murder scene, Ben Talbot, the new assistant district attorney, takes an immediate dislike to Mick. With Logan’s help, Mick and Beth unravel Maureen’s notes to unearth three possible suspects and two are vampires. When they confront the murderer Mick is badly hurt and both Beth and Talbot are kidnapped. Mick must make a life and death decision and needs Josef’s help to do it.
Mick: “I am 58 years older than her, ok…I sleep in a freezer, I drink blood I buy from the morgue and I have the tendency to bite down.”
Josef: “Some women like that. You keep coming up with all these excuses. You’re not afraid Beth is going to get hurt, you are afraid you’re going to get hurt.”
Mick: “I am in love with her.”
Josef: “Yeah, you are. Now go do something about it before it’s too late.”
Mick takes his PI practice public when he takes on a new client, movie star Tierney Taylor and the paparazzi label him Tierney’s “new hottie”. This also impresses Beth’s new boss enough to give her the story. Mick and Beth decide to start dating but Tierney’s murder puts everything on hold. Beth checks out the rumored curse on Tierney’s film while Mick turns up apparent blackmail attempts and secret bank accounts. One of the paparazzi catches Mick on film walking away after a car hits him head-on so Beth asks Josef for a special favor.
Mick: “Look, I’ve been meaning to call you about the other night.”
Beth: “The other night, when you kissed me?”
Mick: “So how do you want to do this?”
Beth: “It’s called dating.”
Mick: “Right. We go out …get to know each other….”
Beth: “We’ve known each other since I was 4.”
Mick: “Alright….it’s weird when you say it like that!”
The disappearance of a little boy drags Mick back into his past with shocking clarity. There is evidence that he left more than his humanity behind….he may have also left a son! Beth has been hired by Talbot to assist him on this case because of her familiarity with two similar unsolved cases but he is not amused when Mick shows up as well. Mick solves part of the mystery of how the killer got into the house but he has to get to Beth before she becomes the next victim.
Mick: “But Josef was right. Vampires can’t have kids, So….if that is a deal breaker..?”
Beth: “Whoa. I think we are getting ahead of ourselves. We haven’t even slept with each other yet. May not be any good.”
(Mick gives her one of those smirky smiles and Beth innocently smiles back!)
Josef donates a new college athletic building and everyone, including prominent vampires, come to the party. But when a star athlete is murdered and a homicidal vampire is the culprit all hell breaks loose. The vampire community is threatened and must take matters into their own hands. Mick and Beth’s new relationship is sorely tested. It seems there are now more questions than there are answers.
Beth: “Do you realize this is our 4th official date?”
Mick: “Define official.”
Beth: “Any outing that doesn’t involve dead bodies.”
Mick: “You are such a romantic, you know that!”
